Frequently Asked Questions

Unfortunately, yes. Honed concrete is a smooth surface and it is great for under cover areas, but when installed around a pool or on pathways it is advisable to ensure your sealer has silica included in it, as the tiny balls will add some extra grip to the area. However, please note, the surface will still be slippery if it has a considerable amount of surface water on it. A better option for around your pool would be exposed aggregate as it has much better grip qualities, even when wet.

Yes, all our mixes can come in any finish. But remember, honed finish will always be lighter than the exposed so although they’re the same, they may appear slightly different once the finish is applied.

It’s completely your choice as it is a stunning option but honed concrete can stain easily when used for a driveway. When tyres turn on the smooth surface, you will often get black marks, similar to when children skid on their bicycles. You may also notice stains a lot more because of the smooth surface, there are no raised stones (exposed concrete) to hide the marks. In our opinion, exposed aggregate would be better suited for your driveway.

Honed concrete is a decorative finish achieved by grinding the surface of the concrete to remove the top layer, leaving a smooth, matte appearance with exposed aggregates. It’s often used for outdoor areas like pool surrounds, alfresco spaces, and pathways because it offers a slip-resistant finish when sealed properly.

Polished concrete, on the other hand, goes through a more intensive grinding and polishing process, resulting in a glossy, high-sheen surface. It’s typically used indoors due to its sleek finish and low slip resistance when wet.

Honed concrete is low maintenance, but a little care goes a long way in keeping it looking its best. To maintain honed concrete:

  • Sweep or rinse regularly to remove dirt and debris.
  • Clean with mild detergent and water, no harsh chemicals needed.
  • Reseal every 2–3 years to protect the surface, enhance colour, and maintain slip resistance.

Because the surface is sealed, it limits stains, mould, and weathering, ideal for Perth’s climate. Choosing a lighter colour can also help reduce the appearance of dust or marks.

Yes, honed concrete is well-suited to Perth’s warm, dry climate and intense UV exposure.

Here’s why:

  • Heat resistance: Lighter honed finishes reflect heat, keeping surfaces cooler underfoot, especially around pools and patios.
  • Weather durability: Sealed honed concrete resists fading, water absorption, and cracking during Perth’s hot summers and occasional winter rains.
  • Slip resistance: When sealed with a non-slip additive, it provides a safe walking surface, even when wet.
